Writers Gather in Mayville

On a crisp fall day, thirteen Holy Angels students joined over a hundred young writers gathered at the Mayville Pavilion to sharpen their writing skills. The bi-annual Young Writers Conference on October 19th was sponsored by the Lumen Alliance of Catholic Schools in Washington and Dodge counties. This year’s featured author, Renee Wahlen Tillema, took the young writers on a journey through the process of generating a concept, gathering information, creating interest and developing a non-fiction piece that could be featured in a newspaper or magazine. Tillema is a Beaver Dam-based writer who has contributed to InSpire Magazine and other publications.

Along the writing journey, the young authors learned how to use the Associated Press Stylebook and the Elements of Style as well as other writing resources. These helped to create a professional approach to a news or feature writing style. Each of the participants was able to generate story ideas and practice interview skills as they experienced the process of gathering information and interesting details. Participants then began to plan their own topic and identify information sources. Volunteer mentors help the young authors to stay on task and provide addition insights and encouragement.

The conclusion of the event saw the young writers dispersing into their communities to compose their own interesting non-fiction piece. Over a hundred pieces will be assembled to create a CD with each participant’s effort.
