Worms Teach About Muscles

As the third grade science classes studied about animal survival, they learned that most animals need to move to stay alive. In an activity called “Let’s Get Out of Here!”, students learned that earthworms responded to touch and used muscle contractions to move. The third graders really seemed to enjoy experimenting with the earthworms, noting the difference between the head and the tail. Cotton balls were sometimes used as stimulus in order to protect the earthworms from direct touch. Some students couldn’t help but enjoy playing with their experiment even if the star of the show was “slimy” and “squirmy”.
