Students Create Opera

The 6th and 7th grade music classes not only studied opera this year, they’ve written one! With the help of Donna Kummer from Skylight Opera Theatre, HA students have produced a performance-ready work. Their theme was the Creation story from Genesis, and how today our mandate is to be good stewards of that Creation. The world premier of the opera God Creates, We Renew was Thursday, April 22nd, the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day observance. The familiar creation story and the stewardship story were told through lyrics and music composed by Holy Angels students which were performed by students in grades four through seven.

Every opera needs some extras to make it great, and God Creates, We Renew also featured colorful scenery designed and built by the fabulous FAD (Fine Arts Design) Team, a solo ballet choreographed and danced to by 7th grader Kali Steilen (and accompanied, in part, by several 4th grade recorder players), a between-the-scenes Theme Song sung by the HA Chorus, a Calypso feature played on some of our brand-new drums by a group of 5th graders, some great “Beat Box” stylings by a group of 6th graders during the 6th grade rap, and several Star Band members adding their instrumental sounds to the piano accompaniment.

The concept of the opera originated with music teacher Jennifer Komassa who coordinated the varied aspects of the project. The opera was the end result of this year’s Artist in Residence program which is supported by the Stehling Project.
