Players Battle for Chess Championship

The 2012 Holy Angels Chess Tournament needed an extra session to determine this year’s Grand Master and Master.  Under the direction of parent volunteer Paul Myers, this year’s Chess Club provided several sessions to learn and perfect new strategies.  The 24 members were divided into two levels for competition: the Mighty Rooks and the Good Knights.

The round robin pool play in the tournament resulted in a three-way tie in one of the pools. After the first tie-breaker, the three players were still tied and a second round robin of matches was played. Brandon Miller finally emerged to take on Cooper Holbrook who finished on the top of his pool.

In the championship match, various attacks were effectively defended by each of the players.  With Holbrook anticipating a pair of moves to claim victory, Miller went on the attack and was able to put Holbrook in checkmate with a queen move to claim this year’s Grand Master title.
