HA Classic… The West Bend Championships (Thursday)

The 7th graders took over the gym on Thursday night in the 33rd annual Holy Angels Classic, the unofficial “West Bend Championships”. In the first game, St. Frances Cabrini-White jumped out to a 14-6 first period lead over the host team. Matt Tomey helped to stretch the margin to 22-14 with a basket and free throw. A 6-0 run by Holy Angels narrowed the gap to 22-20 at halftime.

Baskets by Andrew Steiner and Brandon Miller continued the hot hand for Holy Angels as they grabbed the lead at 24-22. Cabrini’s David Grintjes and Holy Angels’ Ben Tennies exchanged pairs of baskets in the third period with the host school clinging to a 31-30 edge heading into the final period. Another basket by Tennies, followed by a steal and two scores by Steiner pushed the score to 37-32 with less than two minutes on the clock. Forced to foul, Cabrini sent Steiner to the free throw line where he connected on 4×4 to seal the deal for the Royals, 43-34. Grintjes (16 points) and Tomey (13) paced the Warriors. Steiner led all scorers with 19 points while Tennies added 10.

Holy Angels earned their ticket to the 7th grade championship final by handling Silverbrook-White in the evening’s final game. The host team outscored their guests 19-7 in the first half and continued to control the ball in the second half for a 37-19 win. Nine Holy Angels players scored in the victory, while seven Vikings, led by Nathan Prochaska’s 6 points, posted numbers in the scoring column.

The 2011 Classic features a fan participation event, the Halftime ShootOut, in which four contestants shoot baskets in a musical chair format with the last person standing winning a prize and a raffle chance for a bike provided by Mountain Outfitters of West Bend. Junior high teacher Mrs. Arndt was among the evening’s winners!
