HA Classic – First Round

The 36th annual HA Basketball Classic got off to an exciting start as the host school took on Badger-White in the first game in the 8th grade tourney.  The Royals jumped out to a 17-9 lead early in the second period, but the Badgers rallied with a 14-2 run to take a 23-19 margin into the locker room.

The teams exchanged several lead in the second half which saw high energy from both teams with tough defense and scrappy play.  The free throw line was not very friendly to the Royals as the team went 2×14 in regulation. Badger had an opportunity to win with 0.2 seconds on the clock with a tie score, 33-33, and a player at the free throw line, shooting two.  But free throw woes also hit that Badgers and the game went into overtime.

In the over time, the Royals suddenly found their stroke as they went 8×10 from the charity stripe to claim a 41-35 victory. Joe Michels paced all scorers with 19 points, including a three-pointer at the first period buzzer. Ethan Wedemayer added 14 for the Royals, while Carter Mayer led Badger scoring with 15 points.

In other action, Grant Biesterfeld’s 12 points led Good Shepherd in defeating St. Kilian, 38-13.  Jackson Jommen tallied 22 points and Michael Wallace added 10 for Badger-Red as they advanced by beating St. Agnes, 48-41. Ryan Filo (18) and Jordan Blair (11) led the Deacons in scoring. The finale saw Silverbrook defeat St. John’s 47-40 behind the hot scoring of Evan Albrecht (24 points). TJ Simpson and Mason Kirk led the seventh-grader laden Eagles with 12 and 10 points.
