HA Classic Celebrates 30 Years – Wednesday

The eighth grade action was fast and furious Wednesday night at the HA Classic. In the opener, St. Kilian let a first period lead slip away as St. Jerome tallied 16 second period points to take a 25-20 lead at the half. The Cougars cut the lead to 29-27 after three periods. In the final stanza, St. Jerome’s pushed the lead to 39-32 and shut the door as they posted a 41-35 victory.

In the pool play portion of the eighth grade bracket, all teams finished with 1-1 records. In the first tie-breaker (total point differential), Port Catholic took first place (+7) to proceed to Saturday’s championship game, followed by St. Kilian (+1), and St. Jerome (-8).

St. Frances Cabrini and St. Bernard battled to a 24-22 halftime score. But the fun (for the fans) was just beginning. By the end of the third period, Cabrini extended its lead to 40-32. Missed free throws created tension in the final period as both teams struggled from the charity stripe. In the end, St. Bernard propelled to a 53-48 comeback victory and a trip to the championship game.

Holy Angels shut out St. Francis Borgia 7-0 in the first period as Stephan Girard connected for five of his game high nine points. The Knights turned things around to tie the game at 9-9 going into the locker room. A 10-4 run by St. Francis Borgia in the third period provided enough of a lead to post a 28-23 win and a shot at 4th place.
