HA Classic Celebrates 30 Years – Saturday

The 30th annual Holy Angels Basketball Classic concluded with championship games in the 8th and 7th grade brackets. In the 8th grade tourney title matchup, Port Catholic saw a 11-10 first period lead slip away as St. Bernard (Wauwatosa) outscored the Phoenix 11-6 to take a 12-17 margin into the locker room. The Phoenix were forced to foul St. Bernard down the stretch and pairs of free throws kept the Eagles in the lead as they posted a 41-32 victory and claimed the championship title in this year’s Classic.

In other eighth grade action, the battle for third place between St. Frances Cabrini and St. Kilian was decided in the first and fourth periods as the teams played even in the middle periods. Nine unanswered points propelled St. Kilian to a 32-23 win, good for third place.

Holy Angels battled St. Francis Borgia for fourth place and the home team jumped out to a 13-5 first period lead as Mitchell Peters connected for seven of his team high 11 points. St. Francis Borgia found the shooting touch and cut the lead to 18-15 at halftime. The Royals went cold in the second half and were out rebounded as the Knights posted a 33-26 win.

In the 7th grade title game, St. Francis Borgia and St. Frances Cabrini kept things tight in the first half with Borgia taking a 16-14 lead into the locker room. Cabrini battled back in the third period to take a 31-27 lead as Cabrini took the title with a 44-33 win.

In other seventh grade action, Richfield held off a 15-7 fourth period run by St. Mary to eek out a 41-38 win for third place. St. Boniface shut out St. Kilian in the first period 10-0 and maintained control throughout the game. St. Kilian finally caught fire in the final stanza with nine unanswered points, but it was to late as St. Boniface claimed fourth place with a 27-20 win.

In the days opener, Holy Angels-White squared off against Holy Angels-Blue and the first period seemed to indicate that it would be a tight in-house matchup. The White squad’s 8-0 edge in the second period provided a lead they would maintain to post a 30-21 win over the Blue squad. White’s Jake Perez led all scorers with 14 points with Daniel Brugger collecting eight. Mitchell Rinn tallied ten points for HA-Blue.
