HA Classic – 8th Grade: 1st Round

The 34th annual Holy Angels Basketball Classic saw the host school struggle early against Badger-Red in the opening game of this year’s eighth grade bracket. The Badgers jumped out to a 6-0 margin at the end of the first quarter and stretched the lead to 15-6 at the half.  The Royals kept applying pressure and cut the lead to 24-18 with a pair of three-pointers by Andrew Steiner. A basket by Ben Tennies with :45 remaining further reduced the margin to 24-20.  Forced to foul, Holy Angels was able to regain possession but ran out of time with Badger posting a 24-21 victory. Steiner led all scores with 9 points, while Dennis Heikkila paced Badger with 7.

The matchup between Silverbrook-White and St. Mary’s started slowly with the Vikings taking a 12-11 margin into the locker room. St. Mary’s turned the tables in the third period to take a 22-21 lead into the final stanza.  The pace increased as the Crusaders quickly stretched their lead to 26-21, but Adam Marmelink knocked down a couple of shots to give Silverbrook a 28-26 lead with 4:00 on the clock. Ryan Kutz and Tanner Gabel responded for St. Mary’s with nine points to take control with 1:21 on the clock and 35-28 on the scoreboard. Alex Pickering connected outside the arch with :29 left to draw Silverbrook to within four points, but Kutz scored two more of his game high 14 points to give St. Mary’s a 37-31 win.

Good Shepherd took control of its game against Badger-White with an early 15-5 lead and never looked back, posting a 44-24 victory in the opening round. Colin Biesterfeld connected on a pair of three-pointers in the second period and paced all scorers with 24 points. Kendrick Davis led the Badgers with 14 points.

In the evening’s finale, Cabrini surged in the second period, posting a 26-23 lead at halftime while Silverbrook-Blue’s lengthy bench saw playing time during the period.  The Vikings battled back in the third period with a couple of three-point plays to take a 38-36 margin into the final period. As the tempo of the game increased, Max Hardy and CJ Pfeil propelled Silverbrook in a 14-3 run to advance with 52-39 victory. Pfeil tallied 17 points, while Grey Little led the Knights with 24 points.  

The Holy Angels Classic continues on Wednesday with second round action in the eighth grade division.
