HA Classic – 2013

In the 7th grade championship game, the host Royals jumped ahead early, taking a 25-18 halftime lead against Badger-Red. A quick three-pointer by Joey Michels in the third period gave Holy Angels some breathing room until they broke things open with a 16-6 run in the fourth period to post a 50-32 win and claim this year’s title. Michels (15 points), Canon Melstrand (11) and Ethan Wedemayer (9) paced the Royals. Jackson Jammen tallied 11 points for the Badgers.

In other action, Silverbrook took control of their matchup against a flu-ridden St. John the Baptist team with a 21-4 first period outburst, en route to a 47-23 victory. Evan Albrecht led the Vikings with 14 points. Marcus Lanser (11 points) and JJ Kostecki (10) added to the scoring effort. Sam Miller tallied 8 points for the Jaguars.

St. Gabriel’s defense held St. Matthias to just 3 points in the second period in their matchup as they cruised to a 50-27 win.  Sam Treffert led all scorers with 18 points, with Wil Martinez (12) and TJ Driver (11) also tallying.

In the consolation game, Cabrini fought back from a 7-point deficit going into the final period to eke out a 36-35 victory over Badger-White. Hunter Lemler scored 9 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth period, while Thomas Fleischman added 10 points for the winning Crusaders.   

Final standings: 1st – Holy Angels; 2nd – Badger-Red; 3rd – Silverbrook; 4th – St. Gabriel; 5th- St. John the Baptist; 6th – St. Matthias; 7th – Cabrini; 8th – Badger-White.


The host team Royals’ 7-0 run to start their second round game against Silverbrook looked like it might become a lopsided game. The Vikings used a 11-6 third period run to tie the game 19-19 going into the final stanza. Joey Michels took control of the situation in the fourth period with 10 of his game-high 15 points to propel Holy Angels to a 33-25 win and a spot in the championship game. Ethan Wedemayer added 8 points for the Royals.

St. John the Baptist’s team was hit hard by the flu bug and had a difficult time matching up in their game against Badger-Red as the Badgers advanced to the championship game.

In earlier action St. Gabriel used a 15-3 second period advantage to post a 39-11 win over Badger-White. Sam Treffert led all scorers with 15 points.

Thomas Kolasinski’s three point play with 1:13 on the clock gave St. Matthias a 21-20 edge over Cabrini. A pair of free throws by Roman Skurek gave Cabrini the lead again, 22-21, with 1:01 left in the game. Following missed shots and missed free throws, St. Matthias took a time out with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Ben L’Emperer drove the lane to score with 3 seconds on the clock to give St. Matthias a 23-22 victory. L’Emperer and Skurek each led their team’s scoring with 10 points.

Saturday’s schedule: 8:00am – Badger-White vs Cabrini; 9:15am – St. Gabriel vs St. Matthias; 10:30am – Silverbrook vs St. John the Baptist; and 11:45am – Holy Angels vs Badger-Red


The second week of the HA Classic features competition at the 7th grade level.  In the first round, early scoring was key factor in securring a victory. Holy Angels used a balanced scoring attack to jump out to a 19-4 first quarter lead against Badger-White.  Ethan Wedemayer (10 points) and Joey Michels (9) led the scoring for the host team as they posted a 38-19 win to advance.

Silverbrook’s 15-4 first period lead propelled them to a 44-26 win over St. Gabriel. Nate Fleischmann (13 points), Evan Albrecht (11) and Peyton Janto (10) provided most of the fire power for the Vikings, while TJ Driver’s 12 points led St. Gabriel.

Jackson Jommen scored 10 of his game high 12 points in the first period as Badger-Red used an early 16-4 margin to post a 39-25 victory over Cabrini. 

The two teams that traveled the furthest provided the evening’s closest matchup. St. John the Baptist (Plymouth) and St. Matthias (Milwaukee) stymied each other’s scoring efforts with St. John holding a 8-6 lead at the end of the first period. The Jaguars were able to hold their slim lead and defeated St. Matthias, 23-19.

The class team of this year’s Classic at the eighth grade level was St. Frances Cabrini.  They advanced from pool play 2-0 and took on the host team in the championship final.  With a balanced scoring attack and defensive pressure, the Knights were able to shutout Holy Angels in the first and fourth quarters to easily captured this year’s title with a 45-11 win. Dillen Rondorf led all scorers with 12 points, while Mitch Johnson (10) and Andrew Lucka (9) also contributed. Seven players tallied for Cabrini.

In other action, Badger-White outscored Good Shepherd, 52-23, to capture the 3rd place trophy.  Justin Schroedel (22) and Anthony Schlass (14) led the scoring attack for the Badgers, while Ethan Stubblefield paced Good Shepherd with 11.

Silverbrook took a 24-21 lead into the final stanza against Badger-Red.  The Badgers turning thing around down the stretch by holding the Vikings to a single free throw in the fourth quarter en route to a 27-25 win. Connor Gawlick led all scorers with 14 points for the Vikings.

Final Standings: 1st – Cabrini; 2nd – Holy Angels; 3rd – Badger-White; 4th – Good Shepherd; 5th – Badger-Red; 6th – Silverbrook


The host team advanced to Saturday’s championship matchup against Cabrini with a pair of victories in their pool play. In the first game, Holy Angels took a 22-11 lead into the locker room against Good Shepherd. Trailing 34-17, the guest team tallied 15 points in the fourth quarter but was unable to over come the Royals who posted a 42-32 win. Kyle Wilde paced all scorers with 26 points.

In their other game of the night, Holy Angels used a 16-2 first quarter run to propel them to a 45-24 win over Badger-Red.  Kyle Wilde (16 points) and Jake Sterr (8) led all scorers. Max Rohlinger scored 7 points for Badger.

In other pool play, Badger-White defeated Silverbrook, 41-25.  The Badgers were led by Justin Schroedel’s 23 points, while Connor Gawlick scored 16 for the Vikings.

5th/6th place…Badger-Red vs Silverbrook (9:00am)
3rd/4th place…Good Shepherd vs Badger-White (10:15am)
1st/2nd place…Holy Angels vs Cabrini (11:30am)


The opening night of the 8th grade Classic saw Cabrini advance to Saturday’s championship with a pair of wins in their pool.  In the first game of the tourney, Cabrini easily handled Silverbrook 48-14.  In the evening’s finale, Badger-White took an early lead only to see Cabrini take a 16-14 edge at the half. Badger again outscored their opponent to take a 27-23 advantage into the final stanza. Mitch Johnson led the Cursaders’ scoring in the fourth quarter en route to a 38-34 victory and a place in the championship. Badger’s Justin Schroedel led all scorers with 19 points.

In the other pool matchup, Good Shepherd and Badger-Red exchanged leads throughout their game, ending regulation with a tie score at 27-27.  In the overtime, Solomon Zarling connected on a basket and a three-pointer to help propel Good Shepherd to a 39-31 win.  Grant Biesterfeld (9 points) and Sam Zarling (8) paced the winning effort. Max Rohlinger led the Badgers with 13 points. 


The 35th annual Holy Angels Classic will feature some of the top seventh and eighth grade boys’ teams from West Bend. This year’s Classic will again focus on providing a showcase for the WBE and WBW teams of the future as West Bend parochial and public middle school team compete.

The “West Bend Championship” event will give the winners local “bragging rights” for a year. The tournament also offers an opportunity for the West Bend high school coaches to catch a glimpse of their incoming freshmen players for the next couple of years.

The tournament will again have a two-week format to better accommodate the league schedule for the local middle schools. The eighth grade division starts things off on Monday, January 14th, and Wednesday, January 16th, with preliminary round pool play. The finals and championship game for the eighth graders will be played on Saturday, January 19th.  The following week will feature the seventh graders with the opening matchups on January 21st and second round on January 23rd. The final round and championship will be played on January 26th.

Teams will be competing for the tournament title and individual first place trophies at each grade level.  Second place teams will receive individual medals.  All other players will receive ribbons at the conclusion of each game on Saturday.

This year’s participants include 8th grade teams from Holy Angels, Cabrini, Good Shepherd, Badger and Silverbrook.  At the seventh grade level, St. John the Baptist, St. Matthias and St. Gabriel will compete with the West Bend schools.

Last year’s Classic saw Good Shepherd defeat Badger-Red in the 8th grade championship game, while Cabrini defeated Silverbrook-White for the 7th grade title.

The 2013 Classic will again feature a halftime event…Basketball Bonanza. Four contestants will shoot baskets of their choice in a musical chair format with the last person standing winning a prize and a raffle chance for a mountain bike (provided by Mountain Outfitters). Chances to participate in the session’s Basketball Bonanza can be purchased at the admissions table for 25¢.
