HA Basketball Classic – Tuesday

The intensity of tournament play continued on Tuesday at the annual HA Classic with 7th grade teams facing off in first round action. In the opener, Holy Angels-White and St. Kilian kept things tight with the visiting Cougars holding a 24-21 edge going into the final period. A 10-2 run gave St. Kilian a 34-22 lead with about two minutes on the clock. The Royals cut the lead to 34-28 and went into “foul mode” in an attempt to get back into things. Although the Cougars weren’t able to capitalize from the charity stripe, the Royals weren’t able to take advantage of six missed free throws in the closing 30 seconds as St. Kilian advanced with a 36-30 win. Tony Dallman paced a balanced Cougar attack with 11 points. Jim Dieck tallied 11 points for Holy Angels and Trenton Rehman added 10 including 8 free throws.

The fans in the stands got another tight matchup as Holy Angels-Blue and Christ King entered the locker rooms with a 15-15 halftime score. The visitors came out with a 13-4 third period run to take a 28-19 lead. Holy Angels cut the margin to 30-27 on a Joe Wollner basket. Turnovers plagued the host team down the stretch though as Christ King held on for a 33-30 win. Wollner led all scorers with 16 points.
