FSEA Building Interest

The second series in this year’s Future Scientists and Engineers of America (FSEA) is focusing on construction (and a little demolition). Participants learned about the structure of various types of beams and then set out to construct their own beam to withstand weights.

Using styrofoam strips and nails for pinning together pieces, the teams developed many interesting configurations.  In testing the student-made beams, it quickly became apparent that the students were highly successful in their designs as more and more weights had to be located to test the designs.  Several eggs (place under the beam) were eventually cracked, yet some designs were strong enough to withstand almost anything!

The building unit was designed by volunteer Brian Hubbard.
