Basketball Classic – 2010 (Tuesday)
Holy Angels and St. Agnes started this year’s seventh grade division with a nail-biter. The visitors used a trapping defense to throw off the host team and went into the locker room with a 14-5 margin. After exchanging baskets in the third period, Holy Angels cut the lead to 27-24 in the closing moments. A potential tying three-pointer was a heart-breaking moment for the Royals as a toe on the line meant two points. Final score: 27-26. St. Agnes’ Andre Haverwas led also scorers with 13 points while Zach Biermann paced the Royals with nine points.
In the second game of the evening, Cabrini-Green jumped out to a 19-7 halftime lead over David’s Star. Like the first game, the teams exchanged baskets in the third period and David’s Star took a 13-2 run to the buzzer falling short as Cabrini posted a 29-28 win. Cabrini’s balanced scoring saw four players with four or more points; AJ Guhl and Steven Seider led the Thunderbolts with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Lumen Christi also hit their shots early for a 15-9 halftime margin against St. Kilian. They maintained their lead for a 17-20 victory.
In the finale, Cabrini-White handled St. Alphonsus for a 33-18 first round win. Jack Struebing led the Knights to victory with 13 points.
