Basketball Classic – 2010 (Thursday)

The second round of the HA Classic – 7th grade division seemed to follow a familiar pattern as the team with the halftime lead claimed the victory. St. Kilian transformed a 18-7 halftime lead over St. Alphonsus to a 30-8 margin with a 12-1 third period run to assure their second round win. Mason Wiedemeyer led all scorers with 12 points.

Lumen Christi outscored Cabrini-White 11-3 in the second period to take a 19-14 lead into the locker room. Cabrini cut the lead to 28-26 before Lumen Christi surged ahead with a 11-1 run to seal the victory, 39-27, and a spot in Saturday’s championship game. Mitchell Sutton scored 13 points for the victors, while Riley Lutz posted the same for Cabrini.

The lead constantly changed in the semifinal matchup between Cabrini-Green and St. Agnes which saw the teams enter the final stanza with a 22-22 tie. Cabrini had more fire power down the stretch en route to a 30-25 win and the second spot in the championship match. Cabrini was paced by Jake Kopp’s 14 points.

In the finale, David’s Star led 12-6 as the second period ended, but a foul at the buzzer sent Holy Angels’ Mitchell Welker to the line and he cooly cut the halftime lead to 12-8. A 9-2 run in the third period propelled the host Royals to a 17-14 lead. In the final period, David’s Star cut the lead to two points, but Zach Biermann led Holy Angels to victory with five of his team-high ten points.
