A Race to the Finish

The study of scientific principles can take some interesting twists and turns as the fifth graders found out when they worked with friction and gravity. The students were directed to create a marble maze which would take the longest time for a marble to complete. The students listened to each other’s ideas and teams made some very creative mazes. Some of the mazes included sand or tape in an attempt to slow the marble with friction while others relied more on decreasing the effect of gravity. With stopwatch in hand, science teacher Mrs. Thelen timed each of the mazes as students watched. Class champs were recognized for their s-l-o-w marble mazes.
