28th Annual HA Basketball Classic – Saturday

The 28th annual Holy Angels Classic crowned its champions Saturday night as St. Agnes (Butler) and St. Gabriel (Hubertus) took home top honors. St. Agnes proved to be the class act in this year’s eighth grade bracket. In the championship game, the Deacons met a feisty St. Francis Borgia-Blue team but maintained its poise down the stretch in posting a 37-26 victory.

In the seventh grade title matchup, St. Gabriel jumped out to a 10-2 first quarter lead over St. Frances Cabrini as St. Gabriel claimed the title with a 44-39 victory.

In the matchup for third place in the eighth grade division, St. Mary-Menomonee Falls limited Holy Angels-Blue to just 2 points in each of the first and third periods to take control of the game. both teams caught fire in the fourth period but it was too late for the host team as Warriors posted a 39-26 win. Tyler Rehman led the Royals with 12 points.

Holy Apostles’ fourth period rally fell short as host Holy Angels-Blue escaped with a 26-24 win to earn third place in the seventh grade bracket. Clint Banfield tallied 14 points and Cody Ott chipped in 8 points for Holy Angels.

The 7th place game in the eighth grade bracket matched Holy Angels-White and Richfield. The host Royals were led by Eric DuCharme’s 16 points as they handled the Raiders, 32-23.

In the seventh grade bracket, Holy Angels-White outscored St. Joseph, 13-4, in the third period to build a 20-13 lead. The visitors used balanced scoring to turn the game around in the final stanza to post a comeback victory for St. Joseph, 29-27.

Final Standings for the 2006 Holy Angels Classic: 8th grade: 1st – St. Agnes; 2nd – St. Francis Borgia-Blue; 3rd – St. Mary-Menomonee Falls; 4th – St. Frances Borgia-White; 5th – Holy Angels-Blue; 6th – St. Frances Cabrini; 7th – Holy Angels-White; 8th – Richfield. 7th grade: 1st – St. Gabriel; 2nd – St. Frances Cabrini; 3rd – Holy Angels-Blue; 4th – St. Kilian; 5th – Holy Apostles; 6th – St. John; 7th – St. Joseph; 8th – Holy Angels-White.
